Witchcraft in Word Faith Teachings

Witchcraft includes the use of an incantation or enchantment to cast spells. An incantation can take place during a ritual, a hymn or prayer, and may invoke or praise a deity. It also can be used to cast spells on an object or person. This is known as pharmakeia, a word where we get the modern day word, medicine.

Pharmakeia was also known to make spell-giving potions believed to have transforming powers, such as the ability to extend life, boost energy, or enhance the mind. It also refers to any substance used to poison, prevent or treat disease, or gain control of someone’s behavior. In the case of the word of faith doctrine, the substance is your words.

When faced with a problem, any problem, a word faith teacher will instruct you to go to the bible and find every scripture that references your need. For example, if you are sick you would find every scripture that references healing. If you are having financial problems, you would find every scripture that reference prosperity and abundance. You will then need to repeat these scriptures on a regular basis.

Sometimes, a false teacher will give you a list of preselected confessions for the year. These confessions are to be read privately and with the  congregation. The confession may also be part of the Sunday morning worship service.

Positive confession is a new age/thought practice of saying aloud what you want to happen in your life and expect that God will make it a reality. Not only do you have to possess the correct words, you must also have enough faith. Little faith is not going to cut it. Neither can you speak any negative words (negative confession) for that will make your confession null and void. Negative confession is saying the truth/reality of a situation or expressing fear aloud. Saying you get the flu during flu season would be a negative confession resulting in you actually getting the flu during flu season. This logic falls on it’s face when you read how king Nebuchadnezzar thought he had power. After God was finished with him he glorified God and said “all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among  the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? Daniel 4:35

What is man that he can command God? Can creation manipulate the Creator? No. God, forbid!

Positive and negative confession is also known as the “law of attraction”. This is a belief that ‘like attracts like.’ What you put out into the universe will be given back to you – positive or negative. In “The Secret”, writer Lisa Nichols suggests that if a person opens an envelope expecting to see a bill, the envelope will “confirm” those thoughts and contain a bill when opened. A person who decided to instead expect a check might find a check instead of a bill.

My former pastor would tell the congregation that if you have little/weak faith, you better have a good doctor.

Going to the doctors can be seen as a sign of little or weak faith. Many individuals have suffered needlessly because of this teaching. I was one of them. That posting is coming later.

This new age practice IS witchcraft and is being taught in many congregations. I have seen it coming from individuals who are members of Baptist, Pentecostal, Purpose Driven, and seeker/sinner friendly assemblies. The practice of pulling scripture out of the bible to fit your personal narrative is contrary to the gospel. God’s promises are being distorted while this practice continues to be embraced as the key to success, riches, and happiness.

Scripture must be understood as it was written, meaning in the proper context. The bible is not a smorgasbord of words and phrases we can use any way we see fit.

When individuals do not see their words manifesting for them, false teachers support their practice by stating they  are a sum total of what they’ve spoken and believed. They’ll say “if it works for me, it will work for you.” You only need to speak it and believe it. Simple, right? Wrong. The problem is the teachers ignore 2 Corinthians 4:1-2

Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.

Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

If you really listen to their sermons, the underlying message is WEALTH – physically, socially, mentally, materially, and financially. For a long time I pondered why these preachers do not see that thee teachings are in error, even when confronted. These things were foretold in scripture. The false teachers believe scripture is the road map to success. They failing to understand that scripture is not about them. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.  Galatians 4:4-5

But, there is another twist to the story. That is you have to sow a seed in order to reap. That leads down another rabbit hole, so I’ll end this article here.

Believer need to have faith in the Word of God and not in their own words.  The Word of God must not be misinterpreted or misapplied. Rightly dividing the word in its true context is the only way to avoid handling the Word of God deceitfully.

About experiencesinwordoffaith

I am a follower of the risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The purpose of this blog is to share my experience from when I was in the Word of Faith movement. Word of Faith road that seems right until the truth is revealed. I may never know why all this happened. But I can do my best to share my story to help someone else. Each and every believer is called to test all spirits and when there is danger, sound the alarm. Ephesians 5:6-17 reads "Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. " View all posts by experiencesinwordoffaith

The Word of Faith IS NOT THE GOSPEL / The Word of Faith IS WITCHCRAFT VEILED IN CHRISTIAN TERMS

SNIPIT — “WHAT IS BAD IS THAT THE WORD OF FAITH TEACHERS KNOW THEY TEACH WITCHCRAFT!!!

Benny Hinn claims the Holy Spirit told him, “…that if witches and occultists can speak death by the supernatural power of words, then Christian can speak life and prosperity by the same power.” The Facts on the Faith Movement, J. Ankerberg & J. Weldon, Harvest House, 1993, p.23 Copyright ©2008

    ———————————

Benny Hinn: “Witches even..I mean..I’m not here to talk about witches but, but I’ll tell you this.“

Paul Crouch: “They..they under they know the secret.“

Benny Hinn: “,,,because see I had a witch tell me this. And I said what!? She said, listen to me, she said do you know that we are taught in witchcraft how to kill birds with words, and how to kill people with our mouth. I said what do you mean kill people? She said we are taught with words to bring disease on men. I said how? She said by speaking certain words (unintelligible) she said we can actually cause sickness that could very well kill.” Christianity in Crisis (audiobook), tape II, side 3.

    —————————————

COPELAND: Jesus said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks and that’s when the action takes place because that is when the spiritual force is brought up out of the mouth – whether it be fear or whether it be faith – and when that spiritual force comes out, it is going to give substance to that image that is inside of you. People say, ‘that is that New Age visualization stuff’. The New Age is trying to do this. And they get somewhat results out of it because it is a spiritual law. I remember back in the 80s walking through my house feeling bad for ‘making God’ do something I had prayed for…. Then it hit me. ‘I cannot DO anything to FORCE God to do something!’ But that’s what I have been hearing in my Word of Faith church… Pastor would say, “God HAS TO perform His word, otherwise He would be a liar and God cannot be a liar!”

I am SO grateful that God got me out of that church.

When my mother was dying from ovarian cancer, I bought her a small book written by Dodie Osteen , Joel Osteen’s mother. Mrs. Osteen claimed she was healed from cancer by repeating a whole list of what she called healing scriptures in the Bible several times a day. Well, needless to say my poor mother was dupped by this belief, and it is so very sad. At the end she wouldn’t go to hospice nor leave the hospital floor that she was on, nor quit the TPN Pic Line, that gave her nourishment everyday. Her doctor said that we had the worse case scenario. These lies of the distorted scripture made our family feel as if we were going to die ourselves. Cancer had spread to every major organ in her body. Finally her kidneys shut down, her legs were horrible looking and swelling up, and she still fought with her mind that those scriptures were going to heal her. It is amazing what the human mind can do. Finally, after a long hard fight that she gave us, she gave up and said I am going home.

123 Angel – THAT MUST HAVE been horribly hard to go through.

THANK YOU for sharing,, I hope that you shared this is an indication that you blame the false teaching,, and not yourselves.

The false teaching has done this to countless others I have met over the years.

I know one ex-WoF teacher/pastor who was in the middle of a sermon series on healing when his 14 yr old daughter got sick from brain cancer,, she died a few days later and he picked up on his sermon series the day after he buried his daughter. It took him almost 4 years to eventually leave the WoF.

So please realize, it is not you – it is the teaching that is to blame.

You can read John Edwards testimony, along with his families testimonies, here.

@123angel, thank you for sharing. This teaching is dangerous and it’s stories like yours, mine, and countless others that remind me why we all need to continue to sound the alarm and warn others. I lost a sister 9 years ago. She was married to an abusive man. She prayed that he would stop hitting her. He didn’t stop. She eventually left him but went from one bad relationship to another. When my sister was laying in the hospital close to dying, she told me she was angry with God for not making her husband stop beating on her. I was broken. The horrible part is that when I went to my pastor crying because of what my sister shared with me and I knew I was loosing my sister, I was reminded that “words will establish or change our circumstances”. I can barely continue talking about this….but I’ll repeat what Damon said…it’s not your fault.

Are you out from under this teaching now?

  • 123angel

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I am so sorry for your experience too. No WAY am I under that false teaching anymore ! I have found it difficult to read the Bible now, because I am afraid that I will interpret it incorrectly. I’ve stopped watching anything on TBN. I am thankful that I’ve seen the light with all of these false lying teachings. As for blame, I do regret that I didn’t see the light before my mom got sick. God bless you as you continue on your calling in helping to get the word out about these false teachings that are running rampant.

123angel, When it comes to Bible study time do that very thing – study. Compare it to God’s Word and show yourself approved. Acts 17:11
That is where the Word of Faith teachers really miss the boat. They twist the Scriptures. What they should be doing is reading the whole scripture-(the one before, the one after), and taking it all InContext.

Then be ready to be a Berean. Be ready to SHARE with others that to which God has opened your eyes. Staying far, far away from TBN is very wise on your part. There’s an “easy Christianity” floating around that really has an “anything goes” attitude. This “easy Christianity” totally ignores the part about “work(ing) out your own salvation with fear and trembling”.

    Praying for you for real.

  • experiencesinwordoffaith

I also had a hard time reading the bible. What helped me was using an online interlinear bible, reading cross referenced scriptures, and reading some commentary’s. I still have struggles. I had a warped image of Jesus that was hard to shake. So, I started reading Acts, then the books that ended with “ians” (Ephesians, Philippians, etc.) then Romans, and everything else. Once I saw how the apostles referred to Jesus and the gospel, I was able to see much better.

God truly does give to those who seek. As you accept the light of what is before you, you’ll see more and more. Sometimes I just sit and cry when I see what Christs death meant for me.

Now, I am working on praying. After 11 years of praying positive confession…it’s still somewhat difficult. God is so faithful!

  • Dave

Thank you for sharing your testimonies here. I have family members caught up in this cult and pray for them daily that the Lord would open their eyes to His truth. Articles and blogs such as yours are very valuable tools in this all important battle. May our Lord Jesus bless you with courage and continued discernment, giving you effective ways to share your message. God Bless!

    • experiencesinwordoffaith

Thank you, Dave. I still see the people in my former church as family. These individuals are blind. They can not see the errors of the teaching. Facing the reality of this teachings leads to acknowledging that we got it WRONG. Pride hinders that process.

Any type of comment against their teacher will cause them to close up and attack. Individuals in the WoF idolize their pastor. “He receives revelation knowledge” is their mind set. But the reality is…they see the pastor as the mouthpiece for God. This is how cults work.

The desire to be in control and receive material and financial blessings IS their idol. That is very difficult to acknowledge.

Thank you for commenting. Encourage yourself in the Lord and pray. I will do the same on my end for our families.

      • annunk

I have really learned to “listen with a grain of salt” when I hear a pastor or guess speaker begin a teaching with, “The Lord showed me on the Word that…” (Let the reader understand!)

  • hollysgarcia

John 17:17, Luke 10:38-42, Ps 119:9-11 are all Scriptures in my backslidden state that encouraged me to do what was necessary as a believer, the one thing that wouldn’t be taken from me. His Word washes us, lights up our path, builds us up, gives us discernment between good and evil, penetrates to even the thoughts and intents of our hearts… so thankful for His Word…
